Cloud Backup for Sydney Businesses: The 3-2-1 Rule Explained

By Ragu Karthigesan · 28 April 2026

'It's all in the cloud' is the most dangerous sentence in small business IT. Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace sync your files — they don't fully protect you from deletion, ransomware encryption or a compromised account syncing damage everywhere at once.

The 3-2-1 rule

Keep three copies of your data, on two different types of storage, with one copy off-site (or offline). For a typical small business that means: the live data, an automated cloud backup with version history, and a periodic offline copy that ransomware can't reach.

Version history is the crucial part — a backup that only mirrors the current state will faithfully back up your encrypted, ransomed files.

What actually needs backing up

Email and shared drives, obviously. But also the systems owners forget: POS databases and sales history, accounting files, website files and databases, CCTV configs, and the passwords/settings documentation that turns a bad day into a recoverable one.

Test the restore

A backup you've never restored is a hope, not a plan. We set up automated, versioned backups for Sydney businesses and run scheduled test restores — so when you need it, we already know it works. A backup health check is free; ask us.
